A pair of US real estate consultants, Stefan Peirson and Sean Zimmerman, have joined forces to create Strategic International Advisors, a company specializing in the sales, marketing and strategic planning of luxury real estate, including private residence clubs and fractional ownership properties throughout the US, Caribbean, and Europe.

“Our goal with this company is to create more radical, out-of-the-box thinking,” said Zimmerman. “Our collective experiences throughout US and Mexico have allowed us to see first-hand what works well and what doesn’t work at all. In this economic climate, now is the time when great alliances and partnerships should be formed; industry leaders should band together to create more radical thinking; and assets should be pooled to provide developers and consumers with better service and experiences.”

Peirson has worked on projects including The Residences at The Little Nell in Aspen; Esperanza in Cabo San Lucas; the Roaring Fork Club in Basalt; and Rancho Valencia in California. Zimmerman’s experience includes Calistoga Ranch, Napa; Olamar, Cabo San Lucas; and Celeste, in Huatulco.

“We both understand that the consumer now demands only things that make sense. The Private Residence Club concept is a very compelling argument for the purchase of luxury real estate in today’s environment,” said Peirson “Telling the story to the consumer is one thing and delivering that product is another. There is a lot more space to miss the connection in today’s world, and we are prepared to help bridge that gap.”

“Our goal is really simple: create more value, less stress and higher revenue for our clients no matter what stage of the development and sales process” said Zimmerman.

Peirson added: “One of the things we are developing is an out-of-the-box Fractional Customer Relationship Management (FCRM) system just for the fractional industry. We continue to see projects overspend while purchasing, implementing, and optimizing their system before they are organized to sell anything. The industry has demanded this product for more than eight years and FCRM will provide a proper reporting tool with high-level visibility for the various staff levels from the sales person and sales and marketing managers, to the administrator and the lender. This is just one way SIA Living will help projects get to market quicker and sell out quicker.”

Adventure Lovers love to travel to Mexico. It is an easy destination from Colorado, as there are several non-stop and connecting flights. A relatively unknown destination in Mexico is Huatulco. A few years ago, I was invited on an Apple Vacation familiarization trip to Huatulco. Always ready to learn and experience a new destination, my bags were quickly packed and I was on my way to Huatulco.

Huatulco is on the Pacific Coast and located in the state of Oaxaca. If you look on a map, Huatulco is about 200 miles south of Acapulco. Bahias de Huatulco, shortened to Huatulco, is named for the nine bays that surround it. If you want soft, white sand, cobalt water shimmering in the distance, the sound of waves crashing on beaches and a walk alone in the sunlight, then you have 35 beaches to explore.

The Mexican government designates certain regions in Mexico to be enhanced for tourism. Huatulco was one of those regions. About 30 years ago, Huatulco's infrastructure was updated to accommodate tourism. The upgrades also had some green zones to make the area more ecologically friendly. The attention and money was then turned to Cancun and Cozumel as major tourist destinations.

Huatulco has the infrastructure upgrades but did not receive the marketing dollars for promotion. Of the visitors to Huatulco, 80 percent are domestic, due in large part to limited air service. In 2000, the Green Globe award was given to Huatulco as a result of their potable and waste water management.

Four districts make up this little community. Most of my time was spent in the small resort area. The beaches are not bulging with gigantic resorts. My favorite resort is the Quinta Real. It is very small and has a beach all its own. You can sit on a hammock on the balcony of your brightly colored Mexican tiled room, sway in the tropical breeze and sip on a margarita. This resort seeps with peace and quiet and relaxation for a winter-weary soul.

The marina is a delightful place to visit and experience some small, quaint resorts. The little town of La Crucecita is a few miles inland, has a charming city center and shops that offer Mexican treats. The local shops are bursting with colorful platters, leather belts and purses and silver jewelry that will beckon a way into your suitcase. I always purchase Mexican vanilla to share with family and friends who are avid bakers.

Oaxaca is known for its chocolate. I love chocolate, but this chocolate tested my sweet tooth. A very sweet dessert chocolate is not to be expected. The chocolate is used in main dishes as a mole and is very spicy. Another local favorite is mescal. This predecessor to tequila has been in production for more than 400 years. The best quality 100 percent agave Mexican mescal spirits are found in Oaxaca. If you are a connoisseur of tequila, this is a great spot to treat your taste buds.

I think we could all use a little invincible summer to warm our January hearts right now. Pack your bags and give Huatulco a chance.

Welcome to Huatulco, Mexico, where the combination of unspoiled beaches, tropical forests, golden sands and sun, has everyone convinced they've arrived in paradise! Twenty years ago, Huatulco consisted of 34,000 hectares of largely uninhabited forest reserve and nine pristine bays of soft brown sand. The sole inhabitants lived in a humble fishing village known as Santa Cruz Huatulco.

Today, although many luxury resorts have been developed along these magnificent bays, little has changed, and this is the appeal of Huatulco. In recognition of the ecological importance of this region, it has been designated a National Wildlife Preserve, and all development has been planned and carried out with the preservation of the territory in mind. In fact, several of the bays are still completely undeveloped today and can only be accessed by boat.

In total, there are 9 incredible bays and 36 beaches with brilliant, crystalline water bounded on the north by the impressive Sierra Madre del Sur mountains, and on east and west by the Copalita and Coyula rivers. Tangolunda Bay has deluxe hotels, deep-sea fishing, reef diving and five lovely beaches. There's no big city here, there are two quaint small towns of La Crucecita and Santa Cruz that make for a pleasant outing with their coffee houses and colourful shops.

Spread amongst 72.5 hectares of stunning tropical vegetation, Tangolunda Golf Course (18/72/6851) promises a rewarding challenge for golfers of every level. Designed by Mario Schjetan, the course is narrow and deep with many of its holes being fringed on both sides by a diverse landscape of trees, jungle and ponds. Many golfers agree that hole 12 proves the toughest with an uphill green, a hidden water hazard about 50 meters in-front of the green and the Pacific Ocean smiling behind it. The rest of the holes should be played with the knowledge that a wide shot will likely end up out of bounds, there are several hidden sand traps and the course caddies have often been credited to helping achieve low scores.

A subtropical climate with an average year-round temperature of 28°C (83°F) and 330 days of sunshine are responsible for the luxuriant vegetation here. During the rainy season, the dry forest areas turn from tan to green. This ecosystem is unique because it combines jungle and forest with subtropical animals and abundant flowers. Coastal marine life is characterized primarily by coral reefs, purple-dye-producing sea conches and golfina turtles that breed in the area.

To round out a visit to Huatulco, a visit to a coffee plantation is a must. You'll learn about the harvesting and processing of the area's delicious pluma coffee. Bring some of this coffee back to Canada, and every morning will be a pleasure.

Huatulco is the first tourism community in America to receive the Green Globe 21 sustainability certificate. It was certified in early 2005 as the first Sustainable Tourism Community in the Americas and third in the World. The people and authorities of Huatulco are committed to a vision of long-term sustainability and have set themselves the goal of keeping it at the forefront of Mexican and International beach destinations in environmental matters.

All Inclusive Packages and Air Only options are available through Canadian Tour Operator Signature Vacations. Departures are available from Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver.

Oaxaca´s nine bays were chosen as to include the coasts in México's socio-economic development, as well as to aid the creation of South Pacific beach destinations.

Their unique characteristics, such as exceptional beauty, and proximity to important cultural and colonial attractions combined with a perfect balance between cultural and natural resources make them ideal for attracting international tourism. Surrounded by the Sierra Madre del Sur jungle, the nine spectacular bays, San Agustin, Chachacual, Cacaluta, Maguey, Organo, Santa Cruz, Chahue, Tangolunda and Conejos, in addition to thirty six beaches, represent a great option for visitors, with excellent tourist facilities and attractions. Huatulco, which means, "Where wood is worshipped", in the Mixteco-Zapoteco language, is a tourism development that has been specifically planned around the conservation of its local wildlife. As a result, it is also considered around the world as an ecological resort. The project of Huatulco's Bays, located (CIP's) at the south of Oaxaca's state, is the last of five centers integrally planned by the National Trust Fund for Tourism Development (FONATUR). Its operation began at the end of 1988. It possesses a coastal band of about 21.9 miles of length and 4.4 miles of width in the interior side of the Sierra Madre del Sur.

Located 176.2 miles away from the capital of the state, Huatulco's Bays possess an international airport with direct flights from Mexico City and connections with other important cities as well as foreign countries. From Mexico´s city, the city of Oaxaca is only 25 minutes away, and Puerto Escondido only 20 minutes away. If you feel like traveling by land, there are other ways to get to Oaxaca. One is by taking the federal road No. 175 Oaxaca - Pochutla 150 miles, and then taking the road No. 200, up to Huatulco for 26.2 miles. Another way is departing from Oaxaca's City to Salina Cruz, by taking the road No. 190 which crosses 166.9 miles and connects with road No. 200 another 106.25 miles to Huatulco

By Kristin Finan - I never expected to find a knight in shining armor on my beach vacation. But as I stepped into Camelot — a "medieval bar" I assumed would be even less entertaining than "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" — there it was: A shimmering, 7-foot-tall suit of armor.

With its turrets, chainmail, swords and torch-shaped lights, Camelot seemed out of place in the Bays of Huatulco, a tourist region on Mexico's southern Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca. It was obviously someone's quirky dream. But then I realized that the bar was a perfect example of what's so charming about the area: It is filled with simple delights.

From its sparkling bays and sugar-cookie-colored beaches to the rock formations that rise up from the bottom of the ocean, Huatulco is vastly different from the crowded stretches of sand common along the Yucatán Peninsula.

The region, which stretches along 25 miles of coastline, once was home to just a small fishing village. Developed for tourism in the 1980s by Fonatur, the government's tourism arm, it has managed to avoid the mega resorts and restaurant chains that frequently mark such destinations.

Instead, Huatulco attracts its visitors with nine bays, 36 beaches and an average year-round temperature of about 80 degrees. By offering bird-watching, coffee plantation tours, live music and Oaxacan cuisine, it is becoming a haven for those seeking a diverse yet relaxing experience.

Hector Cisneros, guest-services manager at Quinta Real boutique hotel, moved to the area from Cancún eight years ago.

"After Cancún," he said, "this is heaven."

During a visit, you'll find yourself with plenty of time to ponder the simple things that make Huatulco unique.

Like how chapulinas — that's grasshoppers to you and me — taste both spicy and salty.

And how, when the waves crash over your feet, they carry in them little gold specks.

During a boat tour of the bays, most of the beaches we passed were empty. When we saw a young couple walking hand in hand on Cacaluta Beach (which, coincidentally, is shaped like a heart), Pia Oberholzer Herger said it's the peacefulness that draws people here.

"You see why so many honeymooners come to Huatulco," said Oberholzer Herger, who moved here in 1989 and now is the hotel association manager. "You can have your own private beach."

The more crowded beaches like Playa de Maguey also leave plenty of space for simple pleasures. Eat lunch with your bare feet in the sand at Ay Caray restaurant, sip a fresh chelada on a lawn chair by the water or sing along to the Juanes songs playing on a nearby boat.

At La Probadita in La Crucecita you can try local specialties, such as grasshoppers (commonly eaten as a taco topping), coffee and chocolate. One sip of Mezcal, a regionally made agave-based distilled liquor complete with dead worms at the bottom of the bottle, can have you feeling it from your flushed cheeks and watery eyes to your tingling toes.

The region is known for its coffee, and Cafe Huatulco in the town of Santa Cruz is the place to drink it. Located in a lush park, the cafe not only serves delicious drinks made with 100 percent locally grown coffee but also provides an atmosphere you'll want to savor for hours.

The quaint charm that is Huatulco's signature can be deceiving, however.

For example, the lovely church in La Crucecita with its giant fresco of the Virgin of Guadalupe on the ceiling looks like something you'd see in history books. It was actually built only a decade ago. The entire town isn't much older.

And the weavers who handcraft textiles around town seem far less interested in showcasing their artistic traditions than they are in selling placemats.

Even Achim Trapp, who owns Camelot, wasn't immediately forthcoming when I asked about his motivation to open a bar in Huatulco, mumbling something about it being a smart business idea and innovative concept.

Nevermind that he personally designed every piece in the place, including the massive round table (for the knights, naturally) and accompanying chairs topped by crowns.

Or that when I asked to take his picture, he made me wait so he could don a costume, including a shield, sword and helmet.

A Corona later, Trapp, who is German, started to open up. After visiting Huatulco on his honeymoon with his wife, who is from Mexico, the pair decided to move here. The only problem was deciding where to house his collection of knives and swords.

"My wife hated it," he said. "For that reason, I had to build a bar."

Even if you don't come with your own knight in shining armor, chances are you'll find one in Huatulco.

"I'm still very much in love with Huatulco," Oberholzer Herger said. "I see the sea on the way to the office. Who wouldn't want to be here?"

If you go...

Various airlines offer service to Huatulco, including Continental, which has nonstop flights from Houston.

Lodging

Quinta Real: A boutique hotel inspired by The Arabian Nights, Quinta Real features 28 relaxing and romantic suites. Rates start around $185. www.quintareal.com.

Barcelo Huatulco Beach: This all-inclusive has 350 rooms, two pools, three tennis courts and four restaurants. Rates start around $200. www.barcelo.com.

Dreams Huatulco Resort and Spa: A sleek all-inclusive, Dreams offers around-the-clock activities. Rates start around $225. ww.dreamsresorts.com.

Hotel Villablanca: This boutique hotel offers suites in a breezy atmosphere. Rates start around $150. www.hotelesvillablanca.com.

What to do

Take in a show: The nightly show in Barcelo's Oaxaca Theater is filled with flashy fun. Sure, the dancers aren't always in sync, but trust me — you'll be thoroughly entertained. www.barcelohuatulco.com.

Eat a grasshopper: At La Probadita, on Calle Bugambilia in La Crucecita, you can pick up locally grown coffee, sip Mezcal or try out crunchy chapulinas (grasshoppers).

Cruise the bays: There's no better way to see Huatulco than by boat, where the rock formations, wide beaches and splashing waves come to life. Check with a hotel concierge to arrange a trip.

Get close to coffee: This area is known for its coffee, and you can learn about it at its source: a coffee plantation. Access www.grayline.com.

Relax:From an ocean dust envelopment to a hot stone massage to a European facial, the spa at Dreams Huatulco will calm you. www.dreamsresorts.com.

Get active: For information on scuba diving, adventure sports, beaches and ecotourism, visit www.visitmexico.com.

Dining, drinking

Interesting places to hang out in the Huatulco region include:

La Papaya: Huatulco's most popular disco, La Papaya features cheap drinks, upbeat dance music and 'live mermaids' on weekends. Located at Bahia Chahue.

Camelot Medieval Bar:From its castle exterior to a round table inside, this bar is a knight's dream come true. As a bonus, there's an extensive drink list. On Benito Juarez in Bahia Chahue. www.bar-camelot.com.

The Tipsy Blowfish: In addition to its adorable name, this bar has dominoes, chess, food and live music. Located in La Crucecita. www.thetipsyblowfish.com.

Cafe Huatulco: The smell of cinnamon drifting through the windows automatically draws you to this place, and the delicious coffee keeps you there. Located in the main square in Santa Cruz. www.cafehuatulco.com.

Ay Caray: This restaurant's delicious food perfectly complements its beautiful atmosphere. On Maguey Beach.
